El Viejo Almacén

About

In 1969, Edmundo Leonel Rivero turned this corner into a “Temple of Tango”. From that moment on, EL VIEJO ALMACÉN became the obligatory meeting place for the best expressions of city music.

Great Tango exponents approached this venue: Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Roberto Goyeneche, among many others, showcased their talents, which were appreciated and applauded by countless personalities including King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain, Presidents of various nations of the world, and many other personalities who made possible that the fame of EL VIEJO ALMACÉN transcended beyond our country.

In 1977, its demolition was planned and the writer Ernesto Sábato was one of the notable figures who opposed this decision. Although the entire project was not carried out, 140m² of the building were removed during the expansion of Independencia Avenue. In 1982, the Honorable Deliberative Council of the City of Buenos Aires declared EL VIEJO ALMACEN a SITE OF CULTURAL INTEREST, reflecting the cultural importance of the house as stated in ordinance No. 50399.

In 1993, it had to close its doors due to financial problems, but at the beginning of 1996, it reopened under the management of businessman Luis H. Veiga, who decided to turn the traditional tango house into an international-level gastronomic complex with the best traditional tango show in Buenos Aires.

“It was a cherished corner, a wall without a corner, a gathering place for friends, bohemians, and tours.”

The most applauded Tango show in the world recalls the past times of tango and transports us to the times of hoodlums and slums in the land where tango took root… Buenos Aires.
